Riverside Plaza brings new life to a 1960’s regional mall while sustaining the major existing tenant, “Gottchalks” along with four other major tenants. Three new districts include a “Fashion/Lifestyle” district anchored by the existing Gottchalks, a “Neighborhood” district with an expanded grocery store (Vons) , a relocated SavOn Drugs and a Trader Joes and an “Entertainment” district anchored by a new 18-screen theater with a bookstore, restaurants and shops organized along a main street. The project’s design created an outdoor entertainment center with a contemporized urban downtown feel using various architectural styles. Several of the architectural styles were developed from historic examples in Riverside’s own downtown district including Spanish Revival, classic Art Deco, Urban and Neo-Classical that were then contemporized in the final building designs.
